At its core, Metabolism of Meaning is a physical conversion experiment that degrades civilizational heritage into biological heat sources. The work deploys a parasitic capsule containing cryptobiotic water bears (tardigrades) onto an orbiting satellite and grants terrestrial audiences a brutal power: the choice to permanently erase digital legacies of classical civilization, such as data from masterpiece paintings. A participant's selection triggers the deliberate melting of storage media; the resulting Joule heat is utilized to instantaneously awaken the dormant water bears within the satellite payload. For every piece of human civilization destroyed on Earth, a water bear on the satellite restores a corresponding degree of vital signs. The work thus declares that the ultimate physical value of civilization lies solely in the thermal energy released during its destruction. Before the absolute laws of thermodynamics, sacred meaning is utterly commodified into "fodder," forcing the audience to choose between the affirmation of civilization and the continuation of individual life.
